A Computational Definition of ‘Consilience’

چکیده

This paper defines in a formal and computational way the notion of ‘consilience’, a term introduced by Whewell in 1847 for the evaluation of scientific theories. Informally, as it has been used to date, a model or theory is ‘consilient’ if it is predictive, explanatory and unifies the evidence. Centred in a constructive framework, where new terms can be introduced, an initial and more classical approach based on the inverse idea of separation soon manifests the problem of the introduction of fantastic concepts to unify disparate sub-theories. Our second approach is constructed by using a detailed evaluation of the relationship between the theory and the evidence by means of reinforcement propagation. With the use of reinforcement, fantastic concepts can be better detected and the role of consilience for theory construction and revision can be specialised for different inference mechanisms like explanatory induction, abduction, deduction and analogy.

Computational ‘Consilience’ as a Basis for Theory Formation

We present computational definitions for the notion of ‘consilience’ of a theory. The term ‘consilience’ was coined by Whewell [Whewell 1847] to comprise the relevant basics in scientific theories: prediction, explanation and unification of fields. Since all of these criteria are desirable, consilience was informally introduced as a foundational issue for theory construction and modelling. Howe...

Consilient Psychoanalysis

The concept of consilience, that is, the fundamental unity of knowledge across disciplines, is applied to the field of psychoanalysis. Whereas practitioners in other disciplines, especially the natural sciences, strive for consilience, psychoanalysis as a discipline is found to be frequently lacking in consilience. Implications for paradigm change, metatheory, and evidence-based practice are di...

Defining psychology: is it worth the trouble?

Henrique's thoughtful effort (this issue) to define psychology suffers from at least three shortcomings: (a) "psychology" is almost certainly an inherently fuzzy concept that resists precise definition; (b) attempts to define psychology are likely to hamper rather than foster consilience across scientific disciplines; and (c) Henriques incorrectly diagnoses the cause of the scientist-practition...

Seeking Consilience for Sustainability Science: Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and the New Economics

The human system, driven largely by economic decisions, has profoundly affected planetary ecosystems as well as the energy supplies and natural resources essential to economic production. The challenge of sustainability is to understand and manage the complex interactions between human systems and the rest of nature. This conceptual article makes the case that meeting this challenge requires co...
